How does Botox work to prevent wrinkles?

Botox is a neuromodulator, which means it acts to block the signals between the nerves and the muscles. In the facial muscles, these nerves “tell” the muscles when to contract in response to facial expressions like frowning or smiling.

As the muscles contract, they pull and tug at the skin to create lines, wrinkles, and creases that deepen over time. Botox blocks those signals, so when you make a facial expression, the muscles aren't “told” to contract, and lines and wrinkles don't form.

Xeomin® is another FDA-approved, neurotoxin-based injectable that works in much the same way as Botox, but it provides softer and gentler results that some people prefer.

Where are Botox and Xeomin used?

Botox and Xeomin treat dynamic wrinkles on the face, including lines that form at the corners of the eyes (crow's feet), lines that form between the brows (glabellar lines), and lines that form on the forehead (forehead rhytids). In some cases, the injectables may also be used to treat some types of wrinkles around the mouth.

Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles that form over time as a result of repeated movements. Static wrinkles form as a result of sun damage and aging and cannot be treated with Botox or Xeomin.

What are Botox and Xeomin treatments like?

Katie uses very fine needles to inject the solution directly into the muscles of the face. The number of injections you'll need depends on the size of the treatment area.

How long will it take before I see the results of my Botox or Xeomin treatment?

Right after treatment, the injection site may be slightly swollen or red, but these effects resolve very quickly. The effects of your treatment become evident a few days after your injections, achieving the maximum effect in a few weeks.

How often will I need to have Botox or Xeomin injections to maintain my results?

In most cases, the results of Botox or Xeomin injections last about four months. Regular treatment can cause lines to become less pronounced over time, which means you may be able to wait longer between touch-ups.
