Microneedling

What is microneedling?

At Injecting Confidence Aesthetic Medicine, Katie performs microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, using SkinPen®, the first FDA-cleared microneedling device. It contains tiny needles that create hundreds of invisible wounds in the surface layer of your skin. The treatment is nearly painless and effective for rejuvenating aging skin.

The tiny wounds stimulate your body’s wound-healing processes, leading to more production of collagen and elastin. Both of these substances gradually diminish with aging, but the stimulation of their production through microneedling leads to plumper, smoother skin that looks more youthful.

SkinPen microneedling can also help shrink pores and reverse sun damage and discoloration, such as “sun spots.”

How does the process of microneedling improve skin appearance?

Microneedling works in three phases.

Phase 1: Inflammation

The initial piercing of the skin triggers your immune system to kick in and disinfect the wounds. During this phase, your body naturally removes debris, increases blood flow, and begins to create new tissue.

Phase 2: Proliferation

During this phase, your micro-wounds are rebuilt with new granulation cells, which are part of the extracellular matrix. A new network of blood vessels also develops.

Phase 3: Remodeling

During this phase, your skin creates new dermal tissues and blood vessels to smooth its appearance and enhance its texture.

What is microneedling with PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a compound derived from a small amount of your blood. Katie spins down this blood sample in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelet count. Platelets contain numerous healing and growth factors.

When PRP is applied in conjunction with microneedling, the healing and growth factors seep into your skin via the tiny channels and enhance the skin-restoring benefits of your treatment.

What areas does microneedling treat?

Microneedling works well for facial rejuvenation, but that’s not all. Your doctor can use the minimally invasive treatment on virtually any area of your skin. This includes stretch marks and acne scars on your chest, back, butt, or legs.

How many sessions will I need?

Many experts recommend having at least three initial microneedling sessions, spaced about four to six weeks apart, followed by one or two treatments per year for maintenance.

A few sessions of microneedling on your face can result in significant improvements, such as fewer fine lines around your eyes and wrinkles in your forehead. For other body areas, four to six sessions can make a dramatic difference.

Are there any side effects after microneedling?

Side effects are unlikely when microneedling is done properly, which is why it’s important to be treated by a skilled professional. Your skin may feel itchy, tight, or warm for one or two days following treatment, but these sensations typically resolve on their own.
